Mixed Nuts Online Exhibit

This is a great online exhibit (begun with a "real" exhibit in Australia) of art dolls made using a basic shape (nut-like) and it did so well that kirsty campion (the web organizer) has opened it up to anyone else who might be interested in adding to it. She sent me a pdf file of the pattern and I reduced it as it was too large for a beaded doll (well, too large for me, anyway!), and I'm having a go at it. I am using a face I made from a mold I made of an old kwan yin statue we've had for years, so it should be pretty much unique and after she's beaded, I'll cut her out and stuff her adding an ultrasuede back and small hanger.
She's keeping me busy while I'm waiting for that "big" inspiration...

That sounds like it will be fun, Bobbi. Love the fabric. Do you buy all your batiks locally? Have you ever bought them online?

hi arline...yea, I buy them locally since we have a quilt shop with a very large selection of batiks. I've looked at them online, but you can never be sure of either the colors or the scale, both of which I care about. In fact, I saw one on our local shop's online site and went in to buy it and found the scale was all wrong for me...I loved the colors but that wasn't enough.

Can't wait to see this one done. So, you bead it first and then sew it together? Is this the way most people do it? Maybe sewing beads to a stuffed doll as I did for my sister is the hard way - it seemed like it, anyhow.

This kinda reminds me of the comfort dolls. I like the shape downsized a lot better, Bobbi, and that face is awesome!

You know, freebird, I don't know...I just joined a beaded doll group to find out how most other folks approach doll making, but it seems they do it both ways...sometimes you start out with the pieces and sometimes you sew and stuff the doll first and then embellish. I haven't done a stuffed one yet, but I'm going to try soon.
